CA Students – Do you want to be like Legendary Prahlad?
Festivals bring joy into our lives. But if you go deeper to why festival is celebrated and unlock the underlying wisdom; you would hit the goldmine that can transform your life.
Let us dig deeper into the colorful festival of Holi and make an effort to transform our lives.
Let’s first recall the story of Legendary Prahlad in the honor of which Holi is celebrated.
According to Chapter 7 of Bhagavata Purana, there was king of demons, King Hiranyakashipu who wanted to avenge the death of his younger brother Hiranyaksha who was killed by Varaha avatar of Lord Vishnu.
To take on Vishnu, the tyrant king decided to become the king of heaven & earth. He performed severe penance for many years to gain massive powers. Finally, he earned a boon that gave him five special powers. He could not be killed by any human being or an animal, neither indoors nor outdoors, neither at day nor at night, neither on land nor in water or air and neither by astra (launched weapons) nor by any shastra (handheld weapons).
Hiranyakashipu grew arrogant (he thought he was God) and demanded that everyone worship only him. The demon king, however, had a very young son, named Prahlad. He was an ardent devotee of Vishnu and he disagreed to worship his father. He remained devoted to Lord Vishnu. This enraged Hiranyakashipu and he subjected Prahlad to cruel punishments, none of which affected Prahlad or his resolve to do what he thought was right.
Finally, Holika, Prahlad’s evil aunt, tricked him into sitting on fire with her. Holika was wearing a cloak that made her immune to injury from fire, while Prahlad was not. As the fire roared, the cloak flew from Holika and encased Prahlad, who survived while Holika burned. Later, Lord Vishnu took the form of Narasimha – half human and half lion, at dusk (when it was neither day nor night), took Hiranyakashyapu at a doorstep (which was neither indoors nor outdoors), placed him on his lap (which was neither land, water nor air), and killed the king with his lion claws (which were neither a handheld weapon nor a launched weapon.
The Holika bonfire and Holi signifies the celebration of the symbolic victory of good over evil, of Prahlad over Hiranyakashipu, and of the fire that burned Holika.
Now let’s integrate some valuable learning’s from this story to our life
1. How can you be Prahlad?
2. Who is Hiranyakashipu of our life?
3. What do we need to learn from Prahlad?
How can you be Prahlad?
Prahlad had unflinching faith in Lord Vishnu. Can you have unflinching faith in your God too?
Do you know that God lives within you, within your heart?
As per verse 15.15 of Bhagavad Geeta, Lord Krishna says “sarvasya caham hrdi sannivistowhich means I am seated in everyone’s heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness.
How about having an unflinching faith in HIM that everything that has happened or will happen is his unique way of sculpting you into an extra-ordinary human being?
I know this sounds too spiritualistic. But let me prove you the logic behind this powerful thought.
Write down your accomplishments and your strengths that you possess. (just take 1 minute and write down)
Don’t move ahead until you have thought or written down your accomplishments and your strengths. It takes one minute.
Now, I want you to go back and visualize your life and connect the life experiences that gave you those accomplishments and your strengths. I bet that most of the time, you will find that all those strengths were the outcome of your penance and some fantastic learnings out of adverse situations of your life. Isn’t it?
If you do this exercise you will realize that challenges in our life helps us to sculpt into a better version of ourselves. So why to cry when we face challenges – let them come.
You need to develop faith in your GOD that he is giving you everything to help you shape into a better human being.
Prahlad had unflinching faith in God and he embraced all the atrocities of his father.
Can you have the same faith in your GOD and embrace all the challenges of your life?
The choice is yours.
Who is Hiranyakashipu of our life?
The conversation of self-doubt & fears posed by your mind is Hiranyakashipu of our life. Each and every student that I have met, be it rank-holder or not – everyone has had self-doubt and fear in their minds some point of time during their journey of Chartered Accountancy. The quantum of self-doubt and fear may differ from person to person but the fact of the matter is that we all have Hiranyakashipu in our life.
Therefore, there is no point in taking the stress of having self-doubt and fear in our mind. It’s normal. The art is to find a practical way to deal with it.
So what do we need to learn from Prahlad?
Even when Hiranyakashipu used to shout at Prahlad to obey his orders, Prahlad used to smile and stay devoted to Lord Vishnu. No atrocities of Hiranyakashipu could shake Prahlad from his faith towards Lord Vishnu. He never fought with Hiranyakashipu to get rid of those atrocities. He simply didn’t give undue attention to it. He stayed focused on his devotion towards Lord Vishnu.
Similarly, I want you to accept that your mind will keep on bringing conversations of self-doubt & fear. There is no point in fighting with those thoughts or overcoming those thoughts. Most of us are trying to overcome self-doubt and fear by watching motivational videos. It may help somewhat in the short run but the bitter truth is that you cannot overcome self-doubt and fear completely.
So how do you deal with it?
I have a better, time tested and more practical approach to share with you that can help you to deal with self-doubt and fear more effectively.
You can just stop giving undue attention to those negative thoughts of self-doubt and fear. Let me give you an example.
Consider that such conversation of our mind is like a barking dog. Suppose, if there is any barking dog in your surroundings, do you focus on it leaving everything else that you are doing? Can you control the dog? Obviously not!
Similarly, you can simply stop giving undue attention to the barking noise of your mind. The art is not giving attention to those negative thoughts.
Do you want a hack to stop giving attention to those negative thoughts?
Well, here it is!
You can simply say to your mind –
“Thank you mind for your concern. However, my every breath is currently focused on the target that I have created for myself. I will truly appreciate you for becoming my partner to accomplish the target in hand.”
If you want to implement this hack, then download the following wall-poster from the link at the end of the article and keep the print on your study-table to remind you about the above hack.
Whenever your mind distracts you with conversations of self-doubt and fear; you can look at this poster and direct your mind to co-operate as per your will and not it’s will.
Power to control the mind is the ultimate power and IGNITE program has been designed to enlighten CA students to master their mind and equip them with cutting edge techniques to master theory and practical subjects. For more details, refer FAQ’s and student experiences to understand the depth of the program.
May you become Chartered very soon. God bless you!
All the very best!
